The Grand Canal by water taxi: a tour or just the ride?

Four ways to travel the Grand Canal

You can see the Grand Canal from the water in four ways, at prices from €9.50 to over €250. What changes most is who’s sitting next to you, whether you can stop, and whether you pay per person or per boat.

The basic difference: the vaporetto is public transport that passes the palaces; the group tour adds an explanation; the private taxi gives you the boat. The gondola is a separate experience: rowed, slower, with shorter routes. The fare set by the Comune is per boat: €90 for about half an hour by day, €110 in the evening, for up to five passengers; extra time is charged separately, so agree the total before you board. The gondoliers’ cooperatives also hold 7 water-taxi licences, but the rowed gondola remains a different service with its own rules.

Transfer plus tour: the option few people consider

If you need a water taxi anyway, say from the station to your hotel or from your hotel to Piazzale Roma, you can ask to go via the Grand Canal. The Consorzio Motoscafi says so in its information: the standard route is the shortest, but on request it can be extended to take in the Grand Canal. Venezia Taxi also lists a Grand Canal passage on request among its services.

Neither publishes the cost of the extension, or says whether it’s free. Ask in writing when you book.

To judge whether a price is reasonable, the yardstick is the Venice city tariff, set by council resolutions no. 227 and no. 516 of 2011:

• Piazzale Roma – Ferrovia → San Marco: €60 per boat.
• Piazzale Roma – Ferrovia → Rialto: €50.
• Rialto → San Marco: €60.
• Meter for urban trips: €15 on departure plus €2 per minute.

Applying the meter hypothetically to an hour of urban cruising would give €15 + 60 × €2 = €135 per boat, before any surcharges. Sightseeing trips, however, are usually sold as hire with driver at an agreed price, not on the meter: the sum is only a point of comparison. Arriving at the station with luggage? The four GetYourGuide products, unfiltered

At the time of checking, GetYourGuide offers four products built around the Grand Canal. Three are new, with two reviews or none. That isn’t a flaw in itself: it just means we don’t yet know how they work in practice.

Private 1-hour water-taxi tour with prosecco. About €153 per boat, 1 hour, 3.4 out of 5 from 2 reviews. According to the product listing, the private boat travels the Grand Canal (Rialto, Ca’ d’Oro, Accademia, Salute) and the San Marco basin, with a bottle of prosecco per guest; there’s also an option with a guaranteed wooden taxi. It isn’t suitable for wheelchair users. It’s the cheapest of the private tours. Two reviews aren’t enough to judge it; read the low score as a warning sign to check, not a verdict. The maximum number of passengers isn’t stated on the listing: ask before booking.

Private water-taxi tour of the inner canals. About €270 per boat, 3.0 out of 5 from 2 reviews. Here the Grand Canal is only one part: the route mostly runs through the smaller side canals. According to the product listing it lasts about an hour and the price covers a group of up to 4 people. It leaves from the Danieli taxi rank at San Marco, passes the Salute, the San Trovaso canal, Rio Novo, Rio Marin and the Cannaregio Canal, heads out into the northern lagoon and ends near Rialto. In the data we display, the duration appears as “1 minute”: that’s a platform error. Of the two reviews, one reports that the operator didn’t turn up.

Grand Canal private motorboat ride. About €250 per boat, 1 hour, from Piazzale Roma to Piazza San Marco. According to the product listing the price covers up to 6 passengers, with €10 for each additional person. No reviews. The route is the same as the €60 Piazzale Roma → San Marco city-fare trip: the difference pays for the hour at your disposal and the slow pace.

Grand Canal group boat tour. About €45 per person, 1 hour, 4.1 out of 5 from over 1,100 reviews. It’s the only one of the four with a solid track record. The description mentions the Hotel Gritti, Ca’ Pisani Moretta and the Rialto Bridge. The boat is shared with other participants.

Private or group: the cost per head

The private tour with prosecco costs about €153 per boat, the group tour about €45 per person. Divided by the number of people:

Break-even comes at 4 people: €153 split four ways is about €38 each, less than the €45 group tour. For three it’s €51 each, slightly more. For two, €76.50. The calculation stops at four because the listing doesn’t give the capacity: if there are more of you, ask first whether the boat takes you all.

Put simply: a family of four spends less on the private boat than on seats on a shared one, and has the boat to themselves. The risk is the unknown quality behind so few reviews. If you prefer a proven product, choose the group tour and accept sharing the boat.

For the €250 private motorboat, break-even with the group tour comes at 6 people (about €42 each). The €270 inner-canals tour covers a maximum of 4 people: the minimum is €67.50 each, always above the group tour. What you see, stop by stop

The sequence below follows the order of ACTV line 1 stops from Piazzale Roma towards San Marco, with the best-known sights visible from the water. A private taxi follows the same canal without stopping at the piers.

After the Salute the canal opens onto the San Marco basin: the San Marco Vallaresso stop is a few steps from the square. Line 1 then carries on to San Zaccaria, the Arsenale and the Lido.

The Grand Canal is shaped like a large reversed S. On the right side of the boat you see the façades up close; on a private taxi you can ask the driver to slow down in front of a palace or run the same stretch again in reverse.

Vaporetto line 1: the €9.50 alternative

Line 1 is the Grand Canal’s local service: from Piazzale Roma to Ferrovia, Rialto, San Marco and the Lido, stopping at every pier. According to the ACTV timetable, Piazzale Roma to San Marco Vallaresso takes about 45 minutes and in daytime a boat comes about every 12 minutes. A 75-minute ticket at €9.50 covers the whole route.

Two things worth knowing:

• It’s crowded. The worst times are 10:00–12:00 and 16:00–19:00, especially between Ferrovia and San Marco. Early morning or after dinner is more comfortable.
• The pass makes the difference. If you’ll take two or three more vaporetti that day, the €25 24-hour pass is better value than single tickets.

For two people, line 1 costs €19 in total, against at least €153 for a private hour. The view is the same; what changes is the crowd, the timing and the chance to stop. When a private tour makes sense

Paying €150–270 for an hour on a boat isn’t for everyone. It makes sense in a few specific cases.

Groups of four or more. The cost per head drops below the group tour, as shown above.

If a crowded vaporetto isn’t for you. Older people, small children, pushchairs: on a private taxi you board and get off at the pier of your choice. For boats with a wheelchair lift, see the page on luggage and accessibility.

Photos and pace. Only on a private boat can you ask to slow down or go back.

At sunset or in the evening. The Grand Canal lit up is something else, but from 22:00 to 06:00 the city tariff adds a €10 night surcharge on fare-based trips, and operators can apply their own terms. See water taxi at night.

Otherwise, the vaporetto or the group tour covers the same distance well.

How to book and what to check

• Read the listing to the end. For new products, check duration, maximum passengers, starting point and cancellation terms. Exactly where to show up is written on your voucher.
• Look at the number of reviews, not just the score. A 3.4 from 2 reviews and a 4.1 from over a thousand aren’t comparable.
• For a taxi taken on the spot, start from an official city taxi rank or call 199 48 49 50, the number the Comune gives for water taxis, and agree price and route before boarding. Also check whether the figure is for the whole boat or per passenger.
• Recognise a licensed boat. Water taxis have yellow bands and a small TAXI flag at the bow; hire-with-driver boats have green bands.
